I've put up a test server for 1.9 Pre-release 4 up at wave.fourz.org.  It is not permanant and not the map we will be using once 1.9 releases.  It is there solely so we can take a peak at the new features.  A few people have expressed thier excitement about the new game version and I wanted to do something for them.  This is only available for those currently white-listed on Ravenkraft.

If you would like to see 1.9 in an SMP environment, you can do so here.  You will need to download the pre-release client and copy it over you existing minecraft.jar file.  Here is a link for the client.  For windows machines, this file is always located at %appdata%/.minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar (just type or copy this into explorer or the run prompt.)  All you really need to do is backup/rename this file to something like minecraft18.jar and put the 1.9 version in its place.

If you were to mess this up, you can always restore your minecraft install by deleting the bin folder and letting minecraft re-download via the updater.

To downgrade back to 1.8.1, you would do the opposite and rename minecraft.jar to minecraft19.jar. Then rename minecraft18.jar to minecraft.jar.  This way you can retain both versions without having to redownload them both.
