Migration FAQ

posted Mar 14, 2012, 2:43 PM by A. Wizard   [ updated May 18, 2012, 11:20 AM by Félix De Portu ]

There has probably been some unspoken criticisms about my plans on the server as of late and I wanted to explain myself a bit. I'd like to try to explain some of the decisions I have made so that everyone better understands why things are being done the way they are.

What is happening between the Bukkit team and Mojang?

The Bukkit team has joined Mojang.  In future builds of the Minecraft server package, the bukkit team will be providing the API for modders will use.  However, it will no longer be called Bukkit and all current plugins will need to be re-coded for use in this alternative modding system.  This is causing a problem for server owners because some plugin authors are not updating for Bukkit.  Rather, they are either taking their time or  waiting for the new modding engine.  They won't have to start from scratch, but it is a lot of work for something that is going to be obsolete within a month or two.

Why is it taking so long to migrate?

The recommended build for Craftbukkit has not been released yet.  But more specifically, the integration of Bukkit into vanilla Minecraft will cause delays also. Many plugins are not being updated because the bukkit versions will soon be obsolete.  We will be unable to use the exact same plugins as we did previously.  I have found quite a few alternatives and am trying to do this in such a way that will impact the users/residents least.  I need to have enough plugins to actually execute the migration/armageddon event.  This means logging tools, worldedit, and multiworld portals.

Why can't we continue to use our developed 1.1 world?

When jungles were first announced, I started looking into plugins that would allow us to create our own.  With some experimentation, we found quickly that there is no good way to do this.  Biome definition is ingrained into the world seed and the server has to be tricked into interpreting one biome as another.  Without client modding, its not even 100% possible because the clients are responsible for tile shading and other features.  It turned out that Biomed, the plugin that I used for this, had begun corrupting our world generation.  We promptly stopped using it.

The other alternative was to create another world where jungles were possible or maybe even plentiful.  Of course this is still a second world and would require a multiworld portal plugin.  I had read recently that 1.1 and 1.2 world generation would be kept separate and selectable by server admins but it turns out this is untrue.  As such, we must move forward with the new world generation or be subject to Option 2 - Jagged chunk generation.  Almost no one wanted this, as our survey was clear to show us.

The old world will remain available as a secondary world in the future, though it may not be convenient for someone to play there.  During the event, the old world will be made dangerous.  We will very likely use it for future events (such as Easter).

What do you mean by Armageddon Event?  What will happen?

It supposed to be a surprise, really, but what we are able to do for the event will depend on which plugins are available at the time.  As I've said, many plugin authors are behind due to the many many changes in 1.2.  During the event, those that want their things will have a few options for migration.  They can travel by foot and haul their items or pay for a building migration.  Everyone gets their first building ported for free.   The event will last as long as it takes to finish the migration.  It should be a lot of fun.

Do I have to start over with the new world?

If you want to, you have the option.  Alternatively, if you want to get your things from the other world, you will be able to quest out during the event and find it.

What does Vanilla mean?

Vanilla means plain and unchanged.  No mods: pure minecraft.

Why was I not white-listed on the 1.2 vanilla world?

I have limited logging in a Vanilla world.  I couldn't take many chances and only players that had been around and active for some time were asked to come to the new world.  Sorry if anyone felt left out but there is no accountability and I don't really want to play any guessing game theft researching because I was super-nice and super-naive.

Why haven't you responded to my email?

I've been holding off on replying to migration-related email ever since my last announcement.  If it is just details about where to move things, i son't respond until i start to work on them.

What were the results of the difficulty poll?

71% of 14 voted to remain at normal difficulty.

Why not cut out entire cities for the imports?
(From: "I think u shuld cut the cities and place them in random places but give the coords on the website.")

Cities don't normally just cut out.  Everything needs to line up and "fit" into place.  Also, exporting 200,000+ blocks at a time will crash the server.  This could be very bad as it could corrupt or crash as server with low memory like ours.  A City the size of Archea had to be taken out in 12 different pieces and lines up during the export process the last time around.  It is a very time consuming process.  You could export a city, but it would cost as it would be taken in many 20x20x60 size pieces.

World Migration

Survey Results:

Total Votes: 36

Migration and Event

We will be doing imports upon an brand new world assisted by the Armageddon Event when available.  Since the votes were so close, this makes the most sense.  Most everyone can get a little bit of what they want.  The old world will be made available throughout the future also using a mutiverse plugin.  You will be able to travel back and forth via server gates located at the spawn of each world.

The Bartersigns plugin will not transfer and, as such, signs will need to be taken down and moved to the new server.

Everyone will get to port over one building from the old world for free.  Additional buildings will cost, gold mostly.  Those without gold can hunt for tokens.  The purpose of using gold for this is to help re balance gold's value in our current world economy.  Previous events and world imports have diminished the apparent value of gold due to its quantity.  This will also force most of us to only bring what is most valuable and most important to each of us.

When craftbukkit updates AND all the necessary plugins update, the worlds will be linked and the arrmaggedon event will start.  You will find these tokens (little gray squares, item ID 34) in random locations hidden throughout the world.  I will give hints as to where these tokens can be found when the event starts.  After all, a survival server should be fun and challenging. ;)

Please email me with the details of the buildings you would like ported and provide the appropriate payment for each in the chest with your name on it in ravine mine in New Ravenport.  There is a mine shaft available near the blinking beacon.  Also, please be specific about how far below the surface the building includes, details the outer boundaries, etc.  The coordinates for New Ravenport are x: -600, z: 300.   Bring a boat,  be safe and good luck.

Here are the payment denominations:

1 token = 1 building approx 20x20x60 (24000 blocks)
20 gold ingots = 1 building approx 20x20x60 (24000 blocks)

The New World

The new world is already available to senior and trusted residents on an alternate port.

It is ok to start building portals but please be courteous of nearby portal networks.

Downgrade to 1.1

posted Mar 2, 2012, 7:57 AM by A. Wizard   [ updated May 18, 2012, 11:20 AM by Félix De Portu ]

This is the download link  to downgrade your client back to 1.1.  You may need to rename this file to minecraft.jar if your browser renames the file during the download.

Windows 7 Instructions
1. Navigate to your minecraft/bin folder.
2. Right click minecraft.jar
3. Select "restore previous versions"
4. Choose one that sounds right between about a month and 2 months ago
5. Launch minecraft if asked to update say no and check the version number on the title screen

* this only works if you updated from 1.1 to 1.2 not if you just downloaded 1.2

Alternate Windows Instructions:
1. Press the windows key and the 'R' key together to bring up the Run Prompt. (This is also the search bar on the Windows 7 start menu)
2. Type %appdata% into the run prompt and press enter. This will open the Application Data or equivalent folder on your computer.
3. Open the '.minecraft' folder. Then open the 'bin' folder.
4. Find 'minecraft.jar'. It may be labeled as just 'minecraft' , but described as a JAR file.
5. Delete (or backup/rename) 'minecraft.jar'.
6. Place the downloaded file into this folder, replacing the one that was just deleted.

Macintosh Instructions
1. Open
2. Click “Go” in menubar
3. Then choose “Go to folder…”
4. Type in “~/Library/Application Support/Minecraft/bin” (without quotes)
5. Replace minecraft.jar with the one provided above.

Notes about switching and upgrading:

  • To update again at a later time, from the Minecraft launcher select Options > Force Update.
  • After doing this if you wish to keep 1.1 and go back and forth between 1.1 and 1.2, create a backup of your minecraft.jar in 1.1 or 1.2 state in a seperate folder or renamed(via copy/paste)
    • how to:
      • Use three different minecraft.jar files: two backups and one to be used.  Name the old version minecraft11.jar, the new new version minecraft12.jar and your active file must be minecraft.jar.
      • Note: these first two file names could be anything.  You are just changing the name to keep track of which is which.
      • To switch back and forth, just copy the version you want to use over top of your minecraft.jar.  To do this, delete your minecraft.jar and copy the version you wish to use and rename the copy to minecraft.jar
  • If something goes wrong and you hose your installation, just delete the entire bin folder and relaunch minecraft. It will automatically update it to 1.2

1.2 Migration Options

posted Feb 29, 2012, 11:35 PM by A. Wizard   [ updated May 18, 2012, 11:20 AM by Félix De Portu ]

Ok, there are a lot of different ways we can handle the 1.2 Update.  Here, I will describe each and give everyone the opportunity to cast a vote for each.  I will list the pros and cons of each option.

Option 1: Plant a Jungle -- no cats :(

This option would mean keeping the existing map version 1.1.   The only jungle we would have would be planted by us using jungle saplings.  These jungles would likely not have the  tile shading (like swamps do now) and would very likely not spawn ocelots.  Additionally, we could link to a new world that does have jungle biomes (or is a giant jungle), but you would still not be able to bring cats back through portals.  I expect if we do this, many will get bored with the lack on the new content and quit the server in search of one that does provide it.

Option 2: Convert to a 1.2 map -- jagged on edges of new map :(

In order to make jungles possible in our existing world without planting them, I would have to manually change the map-type in the world file and then new generated map could then spawn jungles.  The disadvantages to this option are however quite extensive as this would mean on the edge between the new and old generated terrain would be huge, unnatural sheer cliffs and the terrain shading for existing terrain would be changed: completely random and wrong.  It would look terrible to be honest with you.  This option is listed here more so to express why its not as simple as one might think.  I have experience with these migrations.  I've done several.

Option 3: Start over with a new world from scratch -- no imports

Not much explanation necessary here.  The disadvantages are obviously that all would lose their creations and materials. The advantages are (no so clearly that) it would give everyone back the original intended thrill of vanilla, survival Minecraft.  That is, surviving the night, getting started and playing "naturally".  It would be a totally vanilla start.  Some will welcome this and so I'm listing it as an option.

Option 4: A new world supplemented by imports (same as previous major updates)

This is basically what we've done in the past.  When the new version is available with Bukkit support, I would create a new world and import personal inventories, and buildings upon request.  The disadvantage for this option is the sheer number of import requests I expect to get.  This new world is by-far the most developed of all I have started.  There would be at least a solid week of exports and imports.

Option 5: Armageddon Event -- migration using portals, building vouchers and adventure challenges.

The best way I can figure to get all of the new content, keep all the old work, not be overwhelmed and keep it interesting is with a combination of ideas I've been formulating in my head for the last week or so.  I don't want to ruin the potential story but here are the important bits:
  • Announce, rather soon, that there is an impending disaster (meteor storm, zombie apocalypse, alien invasion or whatever) and that all need to prepare for an evacuation.
  • Vouchers (like the tokens from the Christmas event) would be attainable through various methods.  These vouchers could be cashed in for building import/exports, explained away as a sort of mad scientists' shrink-ray.  Structures (buidings, caverns, sky-islands, etc) of all types could be saved to files and loaded back into the world once a new location is selected by the voucher holder.  This forces organization and make it manageable for me and the mods participating.  Orders could be filled using the Courier plugin.  The "shrink-ray" i.e.: cut/paste removes the possibility for players to (accidentally or on-purpose) duplicate their goods (copy/paste.)
  • Announce an evacuation location so that players can setup secured storage camps (using Factions) and start preparing for the evacuation.  This would mean that informed, prepared players would have an advantage if the difficultly were to be increased by an end-of-the-world scenario (as one might expect).  This also gives opportunity for more teamwork and and faction melding.
  • When Bukkit is updated, a portal would be made available at the evacuation site. (I think we should build a spaceship all Civ/Alpha Centauri style :)  Players would be allowed to transit back and forth, allowing ample time to find new build sites and transport goods.  The portal would stay open linking both worlds together for at least a month, possible longer depending on how well it goes.
Please cast your vote on which methods would work for you.  In this survey, you can choose more than one option.  Feel free to do so.

New Residents

We have had a flux of new applicants this week.  Most are friends of existing residents and I hate to turn away freinds.  However, I will be be unable to add anyone else until after 1.2 releases.  The reason for this is because I know many residents are currently inactive and after the update, we may find ourselves hurting for open slots.  I really should not have accepted as many as I did (especially considering that residency is closed) but if past experience means anything, we will be just fine.

Please welcome all our new residents!

Rule #1 - Land Claim and Property -- some more detail...

There has been a few concerns as to the respect for land inhabited by other residents recently:

Within the nether, if you see an area with large walls of vines filling a chamber, please try to keep the area intact.  Used properly, it is an secure staging area for TMosconi and Annala.  They have asked that others notice it and respect their area.

Tartarus Inferi is the land mass directly south of Babel at the spawn.  It is marked with large ominous fire-people statues.  This area belongs to Player5687, jcul1215, reptilefndr eculbertsone and aculbertson.  Please do not build here without permission.  I know the proximity to spawn is confusing, but we may relocate the spawn point in the near future to correct this if needed.

Minecraft 1.2 Update Coming Soon -- Important Information -- please read!

Minecraft will update in the next week or two to version 1.2.  There has been much discussion over how our world will integrate the new terrain generation features.  Rest assured, we have a few ideas on how this will work, but we will not just jump straight to 1.2 with the new update.  We will have to wait for a updated, recommended craftbukkit release to ensure security.  Namely, the uninterrupted use of the Bartersigns, Hawkeye and Factions plugins.  These plugins are crucial for making Ravenkraft safe and keeping accountability.

For this reason, please do NOT update your client when the update occurs.  Like before, I will have downgrade instructions available for those who did not get this message.

New Builds
  • The Great Lighthouse of Alexandria in TAR.
  • An airport and landing Strip in Archea
  • Aeris - floating islands created by superduck23
The City of Ravenport Trade Rejuvenation Project -- status update
  • Rezoning - Abandoned or multipurposed plots have been cleared or moved.  Most have been replaced with a sign plot marker.  Residential plots are available for RVM members and Trade plots are labeled as Embassy Trade or Trade along with a price.  Embassy plots are available to members of foreign factions.  Members of the transportation group (/f bypass users) are allowed to purchase non-Embassy trade plots as well.
  • Building Guidlines have been updated on the Ravenport page.  The most important rule is  NO UGLY NOOB-BOX BUILDINGS! - please build your buildings to be more than flat-walled cubes.  I know that new people don't quite know how to build yet, but I have created a solution for this: new residents will be asked to build thier first house in Lower Ravenport, the area to the north-east of town.  This district is coming soon.  Those with existing buildings who cannot build within the recommended guidelines will be asked to move to Lower Ravenport until it is "brought up to code."
  • District Labels - Signs are now posted throughout the city to help you find your way.
  • Wizard's Wood'n Things - Now accepting dirt for payment.
  • New Shop Ideas
    • a nether goods store
    • a machines shop (selling redstone, pistons and repeaters, etc) - started by Nickel9
    • an adventure shop (selling beds, tools, buckets and cobblestone)
    • a rare goods shop (selling End stone, mossy, glowstone, cracked brick and mossy stonebrick) and even
    • another building materials stores (stone, stonebrick, nether brick, cobblestone, glass)

New Residents

Kayo01, welcome to our world and welcome back mbslayer and SupremeOre.

Arena Battles Event

Beebee, Jekyell and SupremeOre have constructed an Arena near the Serenity rail station.  We will be holding our first arena event this coming Sunday (Feb 19) around 5:00 PM GMT (11:00 AM CST)  Note:  This has been moved from Saturday to Sunday.  If you plan to attend, please post a reply to the message board here.

Here is how I plan to organize the matches:  It will be tournament style.  Players will start with noting but a stone sword, but as they start to win matches, they will earn tokens that can be cashed in for upgrades.  The winner of the tournament will get a prize, likely some enchanted armor.

I encourage everyone attending to setup Teamspeak 3 as it will be impossible to organize and announce the events over chat alone.

Trade Rejuvenation Project

The City of Hellspawn is no longer the central trading hub it was designed to be.  There are several reasons for this:  shops popping up in other, more active parts of the world, alternate economic systems, and the changing value of gold within our world.  Here are some solutions I propose to solving this problem:
  • Rename Hellspawn - Not the friendliest of names to choose for the central trade hub.  I was thinking Ravenport.
  • Rezoning - I have been saying for a long time that I wanted to build city buildings in the center of Hellspawn.  Upon further thought, I think this would be a waste of valuable land.  Instead, the area will be sectioned off and sold publicly.  There will be no more 1 plot per resident, 1 plot per foreign city.  Everyone will be allowed to purchase and build on a plot.  Old, unused structures will be torn down and re-purposed.
  • District Labels - Signs on each corner pointing to each district or to individual shops.  I will begin working on these this weekend.
  • Bartering - The BarterSigns are a neat plugin that has really helped shape our world, but I am afraid we are not using them to their full potential.  A seldom-used feature of the signs is to accept multiple forms of payment for sign.  The gold standard provides an additional purpose for gold, but it doesn't circulate the same way that real money does.  If each shop accepted alternative forms of currency such as redstone, coal, nuggets or iron, the market would likely flourish.  To add an additional payment option, follow the exact same steps in adding a form of payment.  The plugin will keep track of each separately.
  • Shop Specialization - To create a equally memorable and useful shop, you will need to market it correctly.  Pick a focus, a specialization.  We have a wood shop, a gardening shop, a blacksmith, a wool shop and like 7 general goods stores.  Having one or two general goods stores would be just fine, but to have so many all offering slightly different things with little distinction in the naming is bland and not good if you want to be remembered.
We need :
    • a food shop (that sells almost exclusively food and with a name indicating this)
    • a nether goods store
    • a machines shop (selling redstone, pistons and repeaters, etc)
    • an adventure shop (selling beds, tools, buckets and cobblestone)
    • a rare goods shop (selling End stone, mossy, glowstone, cracked brick and mossy stonebrick) and even
    • another building materials stores (stone, stonebrick, nether brick, cobblestone, glass)
To have a shop that only sells 3 or four main things is better than you think.  It will help you keep you shop stocked, it will make it more memorable (return customers) and it will make it easier to give your shop an appropriate name.

Domain Services

This week, I have rebuilt almost my entire domain.  My domain controller, my router and my fileserver have all been refreshed.  The Teamspeak 3 server has been migrated to a more permanent home and file uploads using Teamspeak are now enabled for idea sharing.  My daily backups are once again back online but I will soon be changing the backup software in favor of something that uses less bandwidth and runs faster.

There has been a few changes to the Moderator Staff:
  • Chewiestmonky has requested and been approved for a moderator position.  He is very familiar with running servers and I trust him to make fair decisions.  Please welcome and congratulate him.  I am glad to have him as part of the team.
  • AntBurrito has returned to the server and has volunteered to help out as well.  Ant is a good RL friend of mine and we have similar opinions about how the server should be run.  I know most of you are not familiar with him as it has been a while, but he was with us before under a different IGN.  Please welcome his also.
Factions Claim Rule
I will be appending a new rule to the server soon.  We should not use factions to claim territory in the Nether.  It is rather dangerous to to this, keeping others from being able to get around and hide from enemies.  There are multiple vertical levels in many places in the nether and since Factions claims whole chunks, from top to bottom, this could cause additional conflicts.  It is OK to mark certain areas as your own with signs or whatever, but it is probably best to keep your valuables through a nearby overworld portal  or well hidden.  Also please keep in mind that because of the nether-to-overworld "crunch" areas allocated in the nether are bigger by a factor of 8x2.  I.e.: an area that is 16x16 in the nether cooresponds to an area that is 128x128 in the overworld.

Mattfu has been appointed as the Portal Transportation Coordinator for over a month now and will ultimately have final say over portal positioning in the case of a conflict.  He is quite familiar with portal mechanics and is good person for the role.

There has been significant progress on the group build.  Beebee776, Mattfu, ChewiestMonky, catherineyoung, Stalin_77, tmosconi, Nickel9, Goldsword44 and awdolan have all been significant contributors to the project.

The terraforming is largely done..  The main structure is is laid out, a sandstone basin has been constructed and support columns setup to support the second and third tiers. The water system has just recently been started. For all that haven't, you should come check it out.  Its quite a sight.  There is still much work to be done and we are always looking for helping hands.  Mattfu estimates the gardens themselves are at about 40% completion.  The Babylonian village has been started nearby.  Future projects will bring us the Tower of Babel and the Ishtar gate.

Server Communication

All along I have used Twitter to broadcast short message and have embedded a feed into the main page for it.  I'm not sure how many people actually use this feed, however.  More recently, I have signed up for Google Plus and just this week added a "Follow me on Google Plus" button on the website's sidebar.  Many more are part of my G+ circle than Twitter and so I will likely be using that a lot more (though I wish I could just sync the two).  Please fill out this ONE question survey to help me decide where I should prioritize these messages.

Upcoming Event

I would like to host a group build event on the server.  We need ideas for a large project that many would/could participate in without worrying so much about creative differences.  Please put your ideas into this thread.  I will announce When and what next week.
Lets find a use for all this wool we keep producing.
Picture Gallery

As many may have noticed there is a rather empty and outdated picture gallery here on the website.  I would like to compile a list of sites-to-be-seen in our world here.  If anyone would like to share screenshot of anything scenic or noteworthy, please email me the pics and I will upload them to the online album using Google Picasa.

Craftbukkit Update
The craftbukkit RB has not yet been released but the development build currently in use seems to be working just fine.  I will update to the RB as soon as the team releases it.

Database Update
The MySQL server that is being used for the action logging plugin has been migrated and this will hopefully reduce some of the lag issues we have been experiencing.  This will also make the logging system itself significantly faster and will log data more consistently.

  • The new tree farm is about 50% complete and will make wood very available in the near future.
  • General_Jak's Archaeological Digs plot is still up for sale.  Now seeking someone to carry on with his fantastic idea.  The idea behind this project was to pay others to assist in an organized mining and building effort, creating dungeons and creating adventures for others.
  • Nitheria is undergoing major renovations and will be a fully-functional city complete with shopping.
  • The rail line between Hellspawn and the spawn point is underway.  Soon people at the spawn will have fast travel to the center of Hellspawn.
  • A rail line has been constructed between Stalingrad and Serenity.
  • A rail line between Hellpspawn and the WAAGH faction continues.
  • Lordnine's Merchant's Guild is now open and selling Iron.  Will soon be selling glass, sand and snow blocks.
  • AznSushi11 is opening a shop in Hellspawn.
  • Player5876 is currently working on a shopping district in Tartarus Inferi.

Update Today 12PM CST

The Map will NOT be resetting.  All is well :)

I've tested the development build to the point where I feel comfortable enough to run it with our plugins.  I'll keep an eye on memory consumption and run frequent backups.  Once the recommended build is available, we will again update, which could be within a few days.

I anticipate no problems.

The update will run today, January 15th at 6:00PM GMT, 12:00PM CST.  The table below can guide you by timezone.

 PST10:00 PM
 MST11:00 PM
 CST12:00 PM

 CET7:00 PM

Client Update Instructions:

Please update your client by selecting the Options button from the Minecraft launcher and clicking Force update.  If there are any problems with the update, delete your minecraft.jar and let it update on its own.
